Seeds of Grace
1992 Building Campaign

In July of 1991, the Congregational Council determined that a study of the facilities needs of Grace Lutheran Church should be undertaken. A Facilities Planning Committee was appointed and authorized to study the facilities needs of the congregation, to propose a design program, and to implement those recommendations approved by the congregation.

The committee studied 1990 Census data for the Raleigh and Wake County area. Members of the congregation were surveyed for their opinions, impressions, and feelings concerning existing conditions and future possibilities. Many members also participated in a multi-session congregational self-study called, "Twelve Keys to an Effective Church".

Results of the survey and study indicated that Teaching and Learning facility needs were most important, followed by Sheep and Goats, then Administration and Communication, Worship, and Evangelism. The suggested direction indicated that the new space should be quieter, more orderly, more planned, more visible, and somewhat larger. People wanted any new building or remodeling to emulate the positive characteristics of the existing space. Analysis of the "shopping list" indicated that people were concerned about spaces for worship, pastor's offices, the sanctuary altar area, congregational seating, secretary's office, restrooms, handicap access, nursery, organ, and the narthex. The analysis suggested that the areas of Youth and Education had the most pressing building needs. The majority of those answering the survey wanted to maintain the existing worship space, office facilities, parking lot and grounds. Results were evenly divided about maintaining or remodeling the fellowship wing. There was an overwhelming response for building a new education building.

With these needs identified, the congregation approved the kickoff of a building campaign that included a motivational study facilitated by a consultant, the sale of bonds to members of the congregation and many other exciting activities. An architect, Clearscapes, Inc., was retained. With their guidance and that of Pastor Duke and the Building Committee, it was soon possible to begin construction of a new narthex, several new classrooms, church office and pastors' offices, nursery and the refurbishing of the fellowship hall and kitchen. Construction was completed by Clancy & Theys Construction Company.
